Thomas Hauser's The Boxing Scene was reviewed in the January 1 issue of Booklist. The review read, “Hauser remains one of the best [boxing writers]...this volume...[is] damn good."
Brian Adams' Citizen Lobbyists was reviewed in the December 2008 issue of The Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare. The review read, "Adams' work makes an important and accessible contribution to understanding participation by providing a comprehensive analysis of citizen involvement in local policy processes in Santa Ana, California[.]... [T]he book does make a considerable contribution to understanding participation and has the potential to enhance efforts to improve participatory policy analysis."
The Journal of American History reviewed Patrick Parsons' Blue Skies in the December 2008 issue. The review read: "Patrick Parsons has written a superb, comprehensive history of cable TV in the United States.... Simply put, Blue Skies is one of the most important media history books to come along in many years. It should occupy a special place in every media historian's library."
Bruce Jackson's The Story Is True was reviewed in the October 1 issue of Voices. The review read, "[A] thoughtful examination of story and storytelling.... It is a brilliant mobilization of storycraft to illuminate aspects of the storyteller's art and the nature of story itself.... The Story Is True is a delight to read. Bruce Jackson has written an enjoyable and entertaining book that is grounded in solid theory and mature observation."

Pinoy Capital
The Filipino Nation in Daly CityBenito M. Vergara, Jr.
"Pinoy Capital is a colorful and nuanced ethnographic foray into the social institutions and quotidian lives of Filipino Americans living in Daly City. Vergara is a gifted writer and his work delves closely on the affective and reciprocal relationships and practices of Filipino Americans as immigrants. This is a welcome and important study, and Vergara puts forward important and innovative assertions and arguments that will have repercussions on debates about Filipinos in the United States."
—Martin Manalansan, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and editor of Cultural Compass: Ethnographic Explorations of Asian America
Legacy and Legitimacy

Swimming Against the Tide
African American Girls and Science EducationSandra L. Hanson
"Swimming Against the Tide addresses a crucial lacunae in the body of literature on women in science, particularly women of color. This is a ‘new’ and innovative approach, since very few book publications on women in science have addressed the subject of African American women in science and from an age specific and culturally relevant perspective. Theoretically and methodologically strong, this is an example of feminist scholarship at its best."
—Josephine Beoku-Betts, Professor of Women’s Studies and Sociology, Florida Atlantic University
The Historiography of CommunismMichael E. Brown
"A piece of original scholarship on a topic of great importance by one of the most profound and scholarly thinkers in the American academy! Essential reading for anyone interested in the history of communism but also for advanced students and professors concerned with the methodological problems that arise in writing any kind of history."
—Bertell Ollman, Department of Politics, New York University and author of Dance of the Dialectic: Steps in Marx's Method
A Moral Military
Revised and Expanded Edition, with a New Chapter on TortureSidney Axinn
"Sidney Axinn addresses the hardest questions raised by the experience of war and argues his way to clear and forthright answers. His book is a virtuoso display of intellectual energy and moral courage."
—Michael Walzer
The Undevelopment of Capitalism
Sectors and Markets in Fifteenth-Century TuscanyRebecca Jean Emigh
"Emigh has written a very important book that will have a big impact on historical sociology. Based on first-rate
research and innovative methods of analysis, she offers an incisive review of previous theories of the transition to
capitalism, and shows how the dynamism and efficiencies of urban markets serve to undermine rural markets."
—Richard Lachmann, Department of Sociology, State University of New York at Albany
Twenty-First Century Color Lines
Multiracial Change in Contemporary Americaedited by Andrew Grant-Thomas and Gary Orfield, foreword by Christopher Edley, Jr.
"An excellent and timely collection on an important set of civil rights issues."
—Pedro Noguera, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University
Technological Turf Wars
A Case Study of the Computer Antivirus IndustryJessica Johnston
"Johnston presents the ways antivirus workers think in fascinating detail. She is very astute and effective in analyzing and explicating the underlying assumptions of their logic. Technological Turf Wars is insightful, interesting, and it unfolds in ways that are quite surprising. Johnston demonstrates that this industry is as much a social world as it is a technical world."
—John L. Caughey, Professor of American Studies, University of Maryland, College Park
Sounds of the Modern Nation
Music, Culture, and Ideas in Post-Revolutionary MexicoAlejandro L. Madrid
How the relationships between avant-garde music and ideas of modernity in post-revolutionary Mexico shaped discourses of nationality
Psychiatry and Behavioral Scienceedited by David A. Baron and Ellen H. Sholevar
"Psychiatry and Behavioral Science is a well crafted, simply written, comprehensive review of evidenced-based psychiatric theory and practice. Edited by two leaders in psychiatric education--one of whom, David Baron, is an internationally acclaimed psychopharmacologist--it provides not only medical students but also all health professionals regardless of subspecialty or years of experience a comprehensive review of the state of the art of psychiatry. The charts and references to critical recent contributions to the literature provided throughout the volume coupled with multiple-choice review exams at the end of each chapter make it particularly useful for preparation for board and recertification examinations. I recommend it to all both within the medical profession as well outside of it to read and enjoy."
—Andrew E. Slaby, MD, PhD, MPH,, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, New York University and New York Medical College
